Piotr Makowski, PhD

Piotr Makowski, PhD, is involved in 3D segmentation of liver vasculature from MRI, CT and ultrasound images at IFC-CNR Lecce.

He was previously affiliated with three universities: Leiden University Medical Center - The Netherlands, Aarhus University – Denmark, and Technical University of Lodz - Poland where he received his MSc in electronics (1995) and PhD in image processing (2003) degrees.

Previous research works financed by Eureka grant in cooperation with Systematic A/S Denmark were focused on segmentation of the heart and vascular system for the purpose of 3D visualization and surgical interventions planning.

Later he worked on quantitative segmentation of vessels for the purpose of CFD simulations of blood flow. Segmentation methods were applied to MRI of coronary arteries with the Aarhus group and CT images of aorta with the group from TU Lodz.

His further works on segmentation of carotid arteries from CE-MRA at LKEB Leiden were financed by STW (Dutch Technology Foundation) grant in cooperation with Medis Medical Imaging Systems B.V. The Netherlands.

While working at TU Lodz he conducted lectures in Computer Graphics and Digital Signal Processing, was also involved in organization of Socrates Erasmus students exchange.
