Ist Summer School, Lecce, Italy

The first ARIS*ER summer school was organized in the beautiful city of Lecce (Italy) from July 4th to July 8th in 2005. Often called "the Florence of the South," Lecce lies in the heart of the Salento Peninsula (Apulia Region). The town is known for its architecture - barocco leccese (Lecce baroque) - of many of its buildings and for its typical fine-grained yellow limestone.

The hosting partner (IFC-CNR) was pleased to organise this event in its brand new buildings located in the Ecotekne campus of the University of Lecce.

This first edition gave the occasion to the ARIS*ER community to meet all together for the first time after recruiting young researchers. Thanks to the interesting scientific program, each partner had the possibility to present his research activities during talks and to start new multidisciplinary collaborations.

A social event was organized at the "Monastero degli Olivetani" - an ancient monastery constructed in 1171-1174. It was radically modified in the 1730's in order to add two remarkable cloisters where we had a refreshing aperitif and a typical Italian dinner. A group of "pizzica" (typical music from Salento) animated the evening with the sound of guitars and tambourines, while their ballerinas made all of us dancing.
